MUSIC & INDUSTRY

On Thursday the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor of the Music Modernization Act, clearing the path for an ambitious bill that will, "revolutionize the way songwriters get paid in America." The bill establishes a new licensing collective to streamline, oversee, and track rights information for digital streaming services. In return, the digital services will receive protections from the multi-billion dollar pending suits filed by music publishers. It's the sort of broad, classic compromise that's been missing from Washington for a decade. But who would've thought it came from the music industry?

BRANDS & BANDS

Red Bull is a classic case study for brand success via music. But in many ways, their path is the most difficult. Red Bull prioritized partnerships with smaller, underground acts - acts that don't necessarily move the metric needle - and stuck to a long-term, coherent vision to establish the brand's credibility. Forbes recently caught up with their head of live programming for North America to chat about the evolution of their music strategy, and it's definitely worth the read.

RESEARCH & INSIGHTS

A good way to check the pulse of an industry is to check the job postings. Want to work in talent management? Artists are looking for personal documentarians and brand managers. Want to work on the label side? They need playlist promoters and Twitch music strategists. Billboard has a full rundown of all the new jobs in the music industry, how to get them, and what it says about the industry as a whole.
