I help my clients develop and execute cultural entertainment properties, from blue chip brand mass market sponsorships to independently run niche subculture festivals. I’m a marketer, innovator, producer, and entrepreneur – an “ideas guy” that gets things done. I have an insatiable curiosity about how music, culture, brands and technology intersect. If you have a good idea or sticky problem that needs solving, I’d love to talk about it.
I founded and served as Chief Creative Executive of Marketing Factory, Inc. Established in 1999, Marketing Factory was an award-winning ad agency that made music work for brands. We specialized in creating brand-owned entertainment properties. Our most successful and recognizable was the Honda Civic Tour. Started in 2001, the successful annual summer tour connected Honda’s brand with over 5 million people at 600 concert events. We produced all the experiential and media touchpoints for the platform, and I led all talent negotiations, striking brand deals with artists such as One Direction, Maroon 5, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, The Black Eyed Peas, blink-182, and many more over its 18-year run.
Before founding my own firm, I had a successful career as a music event producer and promoter where I drove creative innovations in marketing and advertising. I helped to introduce the “alternative” radio format of the ‘80s while working at San Diego’s 91X radio station. In 1987 I produced a groundbreaking music festival in Tijuana, Mexico called MexFest. It was around then that I began to recognize an emerging demand for brand partnerships and lifestyle marketing, and responded by co-creating the Swatch Impact Skate Tour in 1988, one of the first events to merge extreme sports and music.
I co-produced “PBS On Tour,” where I worked with top music talent that included The Rolling Stones, Metallica, Sting and Beck. I’ve worked with the Vans Warped Tour, forging new ground by creating front-line advertising spaces for youth-oriented brands. I’ve played a part in many other festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Governors Ball, Sasquatch and Music Midtown. Previously, as a Senior Director at Westwood One, I produced hundreds of hours of audio programming and promotions for global distribution and worked with superstars like Paul McCartney, U2, Tom Petty, Aerosmith and hundreds of other artists.
My entrepreneurial streak predates Marketing Factory, dating to the first business I founded when I was Sacramento's youngest radio DJ. Party Sounds, one of the first mobile DJ companies, served numerous corporate, educational and private accounts throughout the Sacramento and San Diego areas. Later, I entered the hospitality industry and opened one of Tijuana's first concert venues for nationally recognized talent, Iguanas Showcase Theater, and hosted Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, The Ramones, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and many more. I've continued to invest in and develop a diverse portfolio of real estate, event venues, media and entertainment properties ever since.
